8 Top Tips for Snorkeling Success

Snorkeling is an exciting and inexpensive way to experience the diverse range of life in our seas – here are our top tips for getting started…

Size Matters

Make sure your mask fits your face well before you go snorkeling. Test if it’s the right size by holding it to your face and breathing in through your nose – if the masks seals and holds itself in place, it’s the right size. If air gets in water will do too!

Wear it Well

As well as your mask being the right size, you need to wear it properly. The strap should be fitted so it fits snugly at the widest part of your head – towards the top back. Don’t wear your mask just at the base of your head, as water will seep in. You don’t have to wear your mask very tightly (uncomfy!) as the water applies enough pressure to seal it into place.

Teeth Rest

It’s a good idea to practice breathing through your snorkel before you put your head in the water – so that you’re nice and relaxed. Rest your teeth on the mouthpiece of your snorkel, but don’t bite down on it – you’ll get jaw ache! Allow your lips to seal around the mouthpiece and they’ll hold the snorkel effortlessly.

Fins that Fit

Wearing fins while you snorkel amplifies the movements while you swim and allows you to move quickly and smoothly without any splashing, which can scare wildlife. You need a pair of fins that fit snuggly but aren’t too tight as if you have to curl your toes even slightly you may get cramp.

Wettie Wonder

It’s a great idea to wear a wetsuit while you snorkel. Obviously, if you’re snorkeling in cold water the right wetsuit will keep you warm. Did you know there are lots of reasons to use one when it’s warm too? They provide buoyancy, protect your skin from anything that’ll sting and protect you from sunburn too.

Sacred Space

Snorkeling allows us to see so much marine life it’s genuinely like looking into another world. However exciting it is, you must remember to give marine life space – don’t get too close and don’t touch.

Stay Safe

When snorkeling, make sure you choose somewhere safe to do so – away from boat traffic and dangerous currents and tides. Snorkelling as a group is recommended too, so you can look out for one another.

Breathe Steady

It’s important to stay relaxed when you snorkel – you’ll enjoy it a lot more for a start! Take slow, regular breaths in and out through the snorkel. The sound of your own breathing through the snorkel barrel will be loud enough for you to hear – be aware of your breathing and relax into a slow rhythm, then enjoy the marine life!
